Three cheers for a friend's blossoming venture: Flower Bomber. You can buy a package of 20 flower bombs--ping pong ball-sized balls of wildflower seeds and organic compost--on Etsy (we're both members of Team EcoEtsy). Then, fire away! The idea is to throw and grow them in vacant lots or other places that could use some pretty flowers; you can read the manifesto of the Green Guerrilla on the blog. So far, I've put one of the seed balls in a clay pot and am already seeing some sprouts (pictured). The rest will be distributed this weekend in less obvious spots.

I saw on Facebook that some friends had joined a group calling for the use of BP executives to plug the hole--and then I heard about this fake BP Twitter account that tackles the subject of the oil spill with razor-sharp satire (we'll see how long it's up before BP takes it down--betting they'll be able to stop this faster than the mess they made in our seas). Of course, it's an environmental tragedy that is breaking our hearts--but sometimes you've gotta use humor to deal with news this bad. Oh, and it also feels good to do something to support those environmental organizations that work tirelessly to protect our seas. (Here in LA, we salute Heal the Bay and Surfrider.)--Stef McDonald
For a friend's birthday dinner last week, I was asked to bring bruschetta--simple and easy. But I wanted spectacular, so I used heirloom tomatoes.
Heirloom Tomato Bruschetta
Ingredients:
French bread baguette
4-5 ripe heirloom tomatoes
One red onion
2-3 garlic cloves
Handful of basil leaves
Olive oil
Fresh lemon juice
Salt and pepper
Other fresh herbs optional (I use lemon verbena)
Preparation:
Chop tomatoes, separating the tomato chunks from the seeds (most of the seeds, anyway).
Chop red onion.
Toss tomatoes, onion, basil in bowl and dress with olive oil and lemon juice (2 parts olive oil to one part lemon juice). Add sea salt and fresh black pepper. Chill 15 minutes or more. Drizzle slices of a baguette with olive oil and grill or toast. While still warm, rub toast pieces with halved garlic cloves.
Top toast pieces with the tomato mixture before serving. Top with extra pieces of basil (and lemon verbena).

Cakil merupakan seorang raksasa dengan rahang bawah yang lebih panjang daripada rahang atas. Tokoh ini merupakan inovasi Jawa dan tidak dapat ditemui di India.
Dalam sebuah pertunjukan wayang, Cakil selalu berhadapan dengan Arjuna ataupun tokoh satria yang baru turun gunung dalam adegan Perang Kembang. Tokoh ini hanya merupakan tokoh humoristis saja yang tidak serius namun sebenarnya Cakil adalah melambangkan tokoh yang pantang menyerah dan selalu berjuang hingga titik darah penghabisan karena dalam perang kembang tersebut cakil selalu tewas karena kerisnya sendiri.(artikel diambil dari id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cakil).
Cakil merupakan tokoh asli kreativitas Indonesia. Cakil bukanlah nama, melainkan sebutan untuk raksasa yang berwajah dengan gigi taring panjang di bibir bawah hingga melewati bibir atas tersebut. Ia bisa diberi nama apa saja oleh Dalang yang memainkannya, kadang bernama Ditya Gendirpenjalin, kadang juga bernama Gendringcaluring, Klanthangmimis, Kalapraceka, dan bahkan saya pernah menjumpai dalang menamainya Ditya Kala Plenthong.
Cakil digambarkan berbeda dengan raksasa lain yang hanya satu tangannya bisa digerakkan. Tangan Cakil bisa digerakkan kedua-duanya. Hal ini diartikan sebagai penggambaran "sengkalan memet": “tangan yaksa satataning janma” yang kurang lebih berarti tangan raksasa layaknya tangan manusia. Kata-kata tersebut mengandung watak bilangan sebagai berikut, tangan:2, yaksa:5, satataning:5, jalma:1. Jika dibaca terbalik maka akan menghasilkan angka Tahun Jawa 1552, atau 1630 Masehi yang merupakan tahun diciptakannya tokoh Cakil.
Dalam pewayangan, Cakil bersuara kecil, melengking dengan gaya bicaranya cepat. Meski yang diajak berbicara berhadap-hadapan tapi ia seperti bicara dengan orang di kejauhan. Cakil dalam pewayangan merupakan tokoh raksasa yang bertugas sebagai penjaga batas wilayah suatu negara. Jika ada satria (paling sering Arjuna atau Abimanyu) yang melewati daerah tersebut dihadang sehingga kadang terjadi peperangan, yang disebut Perang Kembang. Oleh karena itu Cakil dalam pewayangan dimasukkan dalam kategori "Buta Begal".
Ia umumnya ditemani oleh tiga raksasa yang berwarna tiga macam. Hal ini terkadang dihubungkan dengan simbolisasi nafsu-nafsu manusia, yakni nafsu amarah, aluamah, supiah, dan mutmainah. Cakil digambarkan sebagai raksasa yang lincah, mahir pencak, dengan gaya berkelahi yang diselingi tarian yang khas. Yang jelas dalam perang ia selalu mati terkena keris pusakanya sendiri. Cakil juga bisa diartikan sebagai tokoh yang gigih, dan setia pada tugas sampai titik darah penghabisan.
Tokoh Cakil dalam wayang gagrag (gaya) Yogyakarta, digambarkan dengan posisi muka langak, bermata kiyeran, dengan hidung wungkal gerang, mulut mrenges dengan kumis, jenggot, dan cambang lebat. Ia memakai sumping sorengpati, dengan jamang sadasaler, rambut odholan (terurai). Badannya gagahan dengan kalung wastra (kalung punggawa), posisi kaki pocong blothong, memakai gelang bala, dan binggel sebagai gelang kakinya.
Berikut contoh dialog yang terjadi antara Cakil dan satria yang dihadangnya.
Cakil: "E ladalah, sasuwene aku pacak baris ing alas iki, ana satria bagus, baguse uleng-ulengan, dedege ngringin sungsang, lakune njungkar angin. Ayo ngakua, ngakua, ngaku! Sapa jenengmu, endi omahmu, endi omahmu, sapa jenengmu?"
Satria: "Buta, buta pantes temen sesipatanmu, dene takon tanpa parikrama, ucapmu cariwis, tanganmu surawean kaya wong ngegusah."
Cakil: "E.. Babo, ladak lirih satria iki!"
Saria: "Apa abamu! Buta, sapa pracekamu lan ing ngendi dhangkamu."
Cakil: "E... Ditakoni durung sumaur malah genti takon"
Satria:"Jamak lumrah wong tetakon ganti pitakon"
Cakil: "Iya, yen kowe takon marang aku, aku andeling praja Girikadasar, Tumenggung Ditya Klanthangmimis, balik kowe sapa jenengmu lan ngendi pinangkamu?"
Satria: "Yen jeneng ora duwe, yen kekasih ndakwangsuli."
Cakil: "Nyata ladak satria iki! sapa kekasihmu."
Satria: "Ya iki satria ing Tanjunganom, Raden Angkawijaya kekasihku"
